Ljusdal is located at Ljusnan, sixty kilometers north of Bollnäs and sixty kilometers west of Hudiksvall.

Ljusdal is the municipality's central town and its business sector is characterized by trade, industry and service companies. The town's largest employer outside the public sector is in the service sector, mainly telephone support and call centers. One of Sweden's only independent unemployment insurance funds, Alfa-kassan's office, is located here. You will also find companies such as Byggfakta and DHL Express (Sweden) AB. Mohlins Bussar AB is another large employer in Ljusdal.

Ljusdal also has a large number of public works of art, where the murals around Bagargränd in particular contribute to putting the town on the street art map.
